Passing by in the car, this secondhand shop literally begged me to stop. I was surprised when a tractor pulled up at the local pub and left the engine running.
After Melrose we headed to Adelaide via Laura. I had been told about 4 sheds worth of junk and collectibles that is kept on a property about 4 kms out of Laura. I was told after we had gone through Laura last time, and so this time I was onto it.
The sheds were full of good stuff, but a lot of junk too. Greg and I really enjoyed talking to the guy who owns it and having him talk about some of the history of the area. We stayed in Adelaide for 4 nights because we had been on the road a lot and wanted a break. We hit Adelaide in time to see the Bowerbirds Market which is held only twice a year. It is full of talented designer makers selling their wares. I knew quite a few from my time at The Hive, but met lots of newbies too. I also checked out Poh's exhibition (the celebrity chef) who is also an artist. Her work is very whimsical and you can tell she has a commercial illustrative background. I especially liked the work she did from the collected feathers from her two budgies. We returned to one of the best breakfast spots in Adelaide, Queen St Cafe in Croydon...best coffee too. Greg and I went for a 20km bike ride up to Henly Beach and Grange and then down to Glenelg. I also spent some time shopping, or should I say looking, at the good end of Rundle Mall. I love love Adelaide with all its old stone cottages and character, yummy food, wine and lots of performers and colour. I only seem to have taken two photos of Adelaide this time....but you can see more here Port Augusta The photos above are fuzzy because it was a bit gloomy and I don't like the flash. This is the Sansouci puppet museum in Wilmington that we passed 15000km ago back in the beginning of August. At the time I didn't go in, but this time I was determined because I like to check out the odd things I see. I was really pleased I did because I met Brian, who is so passionate about puppets. He and his wife, Rosemary have a large collection of puppets. You pay a gold coin donation to see the most special ones and the donations go toward more puppet purchases. Brian used to be a ventriliquist but had a stroke and so is trying to re-learn the skill. There are a lot of old ventriliquist dolls in the collection.
We stayed overnight back at Melrose where we had stayed for a few days 3 months before. When we walked into the bar that night, the barman remembered what we drank...not sure how to take that haha. This is a replica of a 5 metre White Pointer Shark caught on a fishing line 22 km off Streaky Bay. Hmmm...what is with the 'Ladies Band' being so closely associated with the 'lubricating system'?
Look what I found on my walk in Kimba. It has blown us away how people on the road are so generous with their friendship. 'Saint' Clint helped us for 2 hours to fix our electrics cable after he and his girlfriend had driven from Broken Hill that day. Everyone has time for a chat and a drink and no one cares who you are in your 'other' life.
Day 1 lots of this Day 2 lots of this Day 3 lots of this,
but we did see the Great Australian Bite (below) as well. We camped right behind this beach, next to the carpark in Cape Le Grande National Park. Say no more!
We loved Albany. It reminded me a bit of Tasmania. It is the oldest town in W.A. so historical buildings are everywhere and it is set on big granite hills overlooking King George Sound. It was a whaling town but stopped that industry in the 1970's. The town has nearly 35,000 people and so it has all the facilities like cafes, restaurants and shopping. My favourite by far was the best coffee at Liberte in the Old London Hotel on Stirling Terrace. Out the back was a huge ballroom that was lush and decadent with old furniture set up salon style. There were also quite a lot of junk shops and auction houses and so I had fun. We met up again with friends, Glenys and Jamie that we met at Ningaloo and Carnarvon and it was great to hang out with them too.
